Virginia law requires local governing bodies to establish an advisory board before adopting or amending certain motor vehicle ordinances. The board must include an equal number of law enforcement and towing operator representatives, plus one member of the public, and meet at least once a year. The chair rotates annually among the different member categories within Planning District 8.
The advisory board provides recommendations to the local governing body on the appropriate provisions of motor vehicle ordinances before they are adopted or amended.
Members must include an equal number of representatives from local law enforcement agencies, licensed towing and recovery operators, and one member of the general public.
The advisory board must meet at least once per year, at the call of the chairman.
The chair is elected annually from among the members by majority vote, and within Planning District 8, the chair rotates yearly among law enforcement, towing operators, and the public member.
