Standardization of existing fire protection equipment; exemption. The standardization of existing fire protection equipment in this state shall be arranged for and carried out by or under the direction of the State Fire Marshal who may proceed to make the changes necessary to standardize all existing fire protection equipment in this state. Prior to making any such change, the State Fire Marshal may request from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training consideration of and recommendations regarding the change. The State Fire Marshal shall provide the appliances necessary for carrying on this work and shall proceed with such standardization as rapidly as possible and complete such work at the earliest date circumstances will permit. However, the State Fire Marshal may exempt from standardization special purpose fire equipment and existing fire protection equipment when it is established that such equipment is not essential to the coordination of public fire protection operations. The provisions of this section and ORS 476.440 shall not apply to fire protection equipment used under authority of ORS chapters 477 and 526.
