Statute Text
Safe
routes to schools program; rules.
(1) The Department of Transportation, in consultation with the Transportation
Safety Committee, shall establish a safe routes to schools program to assist
communities in identifying and reducing barriers and hazards to children
walking or bicycling to and from school.
(2) The
department may provide the following kinds of assistance:
(a) Grants;
(b) Technical
services and advice;
(c) Public
information and education; and
(d) Evaluation
and measurement of community programs.
(3) If the
department awards grants under this section:
(a) The
department shall award grants for all of the following:
(A) Education;
(B) Engineering;
and
(C) Enforcement;
(b) No one grant
is required to include moneys for all the components specified in paragraph (a)
of this subsection; and
(c) The
department shall adopt rules specifying criteria that will be used in awarding
grants.
(4) A city,
county or school district that has developed or is preparing to develop a plan
described in ORS 195.115 to reduce barriers and hazards to children walking or
bicycling to and from school may apply to the department for assistance in
developing or carrying out the plan. [2005 c.484 §2]
