WINDERMERE POLICE DEPARTMENT GENERAL ORDER This order consists of the following: 1. Purpose 2. Policy 3. Definitions 4. Procedures 1. Purpose The purpose of this policy is to recruit quality personnel for employment with the Windermere Police Department. 2. Policy The Windermere Police Department is an Equal Opportunity Employer . 3. Definitions A. Americans with Disabilities Act – Federal legislation that prevents discrimination based on physical or mental impairment. B. Equal Employment Opportunity – The provision of equitable opportunities for employment and conditions of employment to all employees regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or physical impairment (disability as defi ned by law) . C. Job Description – Summarizes the essential responsibilities, activities, qualifications and skills for a role. Also know n as a J D, this document describes the type of work performed. Recruitment Activities – Any activity or event utilized in seeking potentially qualified applicants for a particular position. 4. Procedures A. Administrative Practices and Procedures 1. An active, positive, and fair recruitment program will be initiated, maintained, and assessed to attract qualified and diverse applicants . 2. The recruitment program purposely involves the support and involvement of the entire agency. The Chief of Police shall be briefed o n the accomplishments, goals, needs, and concerns associated with the recruiting program upon request or as needed. 3. Minority personnel who are fluent in the community’s languages and aware of the cultural environment will be included in recruitment activities whenever possible. 4. Agency recruiters and other employees who may assist in recruitment activities will be knowledgeable in personnel matters to include Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Applicable training shall be provided for everyone involved in the recruiting function. [8.01M (POC)] 5. Written job descriptions support recruitment strategies and procedures. Candidates meeting or exceedin g job requirements are actively recruited. Prerequisite requirements for recruitment include knowledge, skills, abilities, education, training, experience, personality, interests, and other documented and valid requirements of the job being recruited. 6. Employees are encouraged to refer highly qualified candidates for positions available within the agency. All referrals and letters of recommendation will be included in the applicant’s file. B. Community Outreach 1. Recruitment assistance and referrals will b e actively sought from community organizations and key leaders. The objective of these contacts is to broaden exposure within the service community and, as a result, 18.3 , Page 3 increase the pool of qualified candidates. 2. Job announcements should be posted and access to prescreening applications made available within community service organizations that are in contact with individuals who are likely candidates for recruitment. ________________________ Chief David A.
