Village of El Portal Police Department

POLICY 212.0 SENIOR CITIZEN CHECKS ESTABLISHED 6/2019 RELATED POLICIES: Reviewed by Chief David Magnusson 6/2019 A.POLICY The Village of El Portal Police Department values its senior citizens. During time of pending emergency, such as the arrival of a hurricane, the Village of El Portal has made it top priority to check on the welfare and well-being of its senior citizens. However, it is also equally important that the senior citizens are checked upon with greater regularity, not just when a storm or other major event is set to occur. Therefore, the Village of El Portal Police Department shall consistently check on the addresses of the list of seniors given to them on a regular basis to ensure they are ok and not in need of any services that otherwise we may have been unaware of. Code Enforcement personnel will also be able to take part in this most important community caring objective. B.PROCEDURE 1.A list of current senior citizens living within the boundaries of El Portal has been established and will be maintained and updated periodically. 2. The officers will be assigned a block of names/addresses based on the structure of the list. For instance, if there are 50 names and addressed on the list, officer John Doe would take 1-8; Officer John Smith would take 9-17, and so on and so forth. These specific names and addresses would be these officers’ responsibility during their tour of duty over the week. They need not check on each address every day; however, by the end of each work week, they need check on their names and addresses at least once. That being said, if Officer Doe went to all nine locations assigned to hm on Monday (he is off Fri/Sat/Sun), he should not wait 10 days later to revisit the locations again on the following Thursday. 3.The Auxiliary/Reserve Officers will check on at least four senior citizen addresses during their tour of duty for the month. That would amount to eight checks per month. They too will be assigned specific addresses. Their checks have nothing to do with the checks the full-time officers are doing. This will merely supplement their efforts 4. Each day (of work) the number of senior citizen home checks will be documented on the officers’ worksheets. 5. Needed follow up with the proper agencies and entities will commence should a home check reveal the need to do so.
