POLICE TRAINING OFFICER PROGRAM
EFFECTIVE MARCH 01, 2010 THERE WILL BE NEW POLICY AND PROCEDURES IN
PLACE REFERENCE THE TRAINING POLICE OFFICER PROGRAM HOURS OF
SERVICE (COMMITMENT) AND LENGTH OF PROGRAM. BELOW STATED WILL BE
THE DIFFERENT AREAS THAT YOU WILL BE TRAINED IN AS PER DEPARTMENTAL
GUIDELINES AND S.O.P. EXPECTED TO SCORE SATISFACTORY IN ALL AREAS.
DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME THE T.P.O CAN BE SWITCHED THROUGH
DIFFERENT PHASES OF TRAINING AND OFFICER’S TO GET AS MUCH AS YOU
POSSIBLY CAN FROM EACH F.T.O. AND THE PROGRAM ITSELF. AT THE END OF
THE FINAL PHASE YOU WILL RIDE ALONG WITH THE POLICE SERGEANT TO
APPROVE THE TRAINING THAT YOU THE T.P.O. HAS RECEIVED AND INSTRUCTED
IN, AND TO ENSURE THE PROPER PROCEDURES OF ALL S.O.P’S AND
DEPARTMENTAL GUIDELINES AS SET FORTH BY THE EL PORTAL POLICE
DEPARTMENT.

FULL F.T.O PROGRAM HOURS, POLICY, AND PROCEDURE FOR TRAINING
POLICE OFFICER(S)
11.5 MONTHS AT 40 HOURS A MONTH = 460 TOTAL TRAINABLE HOURS.
460 HOURS OF COMMITMENT
WHILE IN THE T.P.O. PROGRAM THE T.P.O. OFFICER IS NOT FOR ANY
CIRCUMSTANCE UNLESS APPROVED BY ADMINISTRATION WORK
OFF-DUTY IN OR OUT OF THE VILLAGE OF EL PORTAL.
UPON NOT RESPONDING TO TRAINING ON YOUR DAY OF COMMITMENT A
PHONE CALL AND/OR EMAIL IS MANDATORY TO BE MADE OR SENT OUT
TO YOUR F.T.O. FIRST AT WHICH TIME YOU GET NO RESPONSE AND/OR
ANSWER YOU ARE TO CONTACT VIA THE SAME PROTOCOL THE POLICE
SERGEANT ADVISING REASON(S) AS TO WHY HE/ORSHE CAN NOT COME
OUT REFERENCE TRAINING.

F.T.O’S UPON TAKING TIME OFF, VACATION AND/OR SICK SHALL ADVISE
T.P.O BY PHONE AND/OR EMAIL THAT THEY ARE NOT TO RESPOND TO
TRAINING ON THAT DAY OR TIME FRAME.
POLICE EQUIPMENT WHILE ON T.P.O. TRAINING AND/OR AFTER IS NOT TO
BE REMOVED AT ANY TIME WITHOUT THE AUTHORIZATION OF
ADMINISTRATION.
T.P.O.’S ARE TO REPORT IN FULL UNIFORM WELL GROOMED EACH AND
EVERY DAY OF COMMITMENT UNLESS OTHER WISE STATED BY
ADMINISTRATION.
IF T.P.O.’S HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE F.T.O. IN ANY WHICH WAY
THEY ARE TO ADDRESS ONLY THE POLICE SERGEANT IN FOLLOWING
PROPER CHAIN OF COMMAND PROTOCOL.
T.P.O.’S AT ALL TIMES WHILE WORKING ON THE FIELD ARE TO HAVE THE
FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT AS PART OF THERE COMPLETE UNIFORM.
1.FULL UNIFORM W/ PATCHES TO INCLUDE EL PORTAL POLICE BADGE
AND (2) SILVER PENS.
2.FULL DUTY BELT TO INCLUDE A SET OF HANDCUFFS, FIREARM,
MAGAZINE’S, BULLETS, ASP, RADIO HOLDER, AND A EL PORTAL
PART-TIME HANDHELD RADIO.
3.SHOES ALLOWED: POLICE WORK BOOTS AND/OR SNEAKERS (BLACK)
NOTE: ALL EQUIPMENT STATED ABOVE IS TO BE PURCHASED BY THE T.P.O.
EXCEPT FOR THE EL PORTAL POLICE BADGE, PATCH, AND PART-TIME
POLICE RADIO.
WEEKLY/MONTHLY/COURTESY/END OF TRAINING BREAKDOWN
WEEKLY COMMITMENT WILL BE = NO LESS THAN 10 HRS WEEKLY
MONTHLY COMMITMENT WILL BE = NO LESS THAN 40 OR 50 HRS A MONTH
(DEPENDING ON WETHER OR NOT THE MONTH IS A (4) WEEK OR (5) WEEK MONTH.)
TOTAL HOURS OF COMMITMENT = 460HRS
TOTAL NUMBER OF MONTHS FOR COMPLETION = 11.5 MTHS
NOTE: T.P.O.’S ARE TO COMPLETE AS STATED ABOVE WITH NO EXCEPTIONS UNLESS
AUTHORIZED BY ADMINISTRATION.
