Village of El Portal Police Department

Policy Text
POLICY 151.0RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES REVISED: 11/2011 RELATED POLICIES: Reviewed by Chief David Magnusson 4/2019 A.The owner/lessee of the residence attacked shall be listed as victim number one (1). Any persons OTHER THAN A MEMBER OF THE OWNER/LESSEE'S IMMEDIATE FAMILY, suffering a loss shall be listed as an additional victim (V2, V3, etc.) The victims should submit separate Property Loss Report listing their individual losses. B.List Brand, model, and serial number of all items taken. DO NOT ESTIMATE THE VALUE OF INDIVIDUAL ITEMS THAT IS THE PREROGATIVE OF THE VICTIM. You may, however, give your estimate of a general loss figure in the narrative. If the victim is to supply a loss list on the Property Loss Report, advise him/her of the necessity for promptness in supplying this information (the quicker the NCIC entry, the better the chance of loss recovery via the pawn shop detail or the efforts of other Departments). C.If the victim is a guest or transient, ALWAYS list the permanent home address of the victim, their expected length of stay in the area (Dade, Broward, Palm Beach County), and their immediate future (one month) itinerary, if known. D.In ALL burglary reports, have the owner, lessee, or employee sign the affidavit section of the report at the time the report is taken. E.Scenes will be processed. If, in the opinion of the on-scene supervisor, the loss is substantial or the processing capabilities required are beyond that of on duty personnel, the Chief of Police or his/her designee shall be notified. F.Area checks are an important investigative tool on residential burglaries. When possible/practical area checks should be made showing the address of the individual checked even if you have a suspect in custody. This may reveal the presence of accomplices in the crime. If ANY information was gained by the check, list same in the narrative of the report. G.If the victim(s) and or/witness(s) are not from Dade, Broward or Palm Beach Counties, and are about to leave the Village within 72 hours, the Chief of Police or his/her designee will be notified to take necessary statements. H.All cases of ARMED residential burglaries, the Chief of Police or his/her designee will be notified. These are cases where robbery appears to be the initial motive. Burglaries where suspect is armed or arms himself within and no confrontation takes place will be handled as a Burglary. Page 1 of 1
