129.0OUTSIDE EMPLOYMENT

Pursuant to Miami-Dade County Code2-11(c), any employee of the Department who wishes to
obtain secondary outside employment, must obtain prior approval from the Chief of Police. No
employee shall engage in secondary outside employment without approval of the Chief of Police.
The Employee shall complete an “Request for Outside Employment” form and submit the
request to the Chief of Police for his approval. This “Request for Outside Employment” form
must be resubmitted on a yearly basis. Request shall be submitted through their immediate
supervisor and chain-of-command, who must approve and sign the request prior to reaching the
Chief.
Outside employment shall not be in conflict with the interest, or basic tenants tenets of police
philosophy or activity.
The following types of work are prohibited;
Employment connected with any business licensed under the beverage law;
Employment by a company with connections to a towing company;
Employment as a process server;
Employment as a bodyguard;
Employment as a private investigator;
Employment as a bill collector or retail credit investigator;
Employment as a bondsman or bondsman’s runner;
Employment in an adult video, adult entertainment or adult toy store or business.

HOURS
Outside employment hours shall not exceed 24 hours per calendar week.
All employment, including duty hours, off-duty and outside employment, shall not exceed 64
hours per calendar week.
Employees shall engage in outside employment until the Village Manager grants the final
approval.
Employee are responsible to have on file, at the Chief’s office, the employee’s address and
telephone number, or other mean of contacts.
Employees shall not represent themselves as a member of the El Portal Police Department,
perform outside employment while in an on-duty status, or use any departmental credentials,
facilities, equipment, or informational systems; e.g., telephones, computers, copy or facsimile
machines.
