POLICY 105.0SICK/LATE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES REVISED: 11 /2011 REVISED: 4/2019RELATED POLICIES: Reviewed and Revised by Chief David Magnusson 4/2019 A.SICK 1.It is the policy of the El Portal Police Department that sick leave not be considered a right which an employee may use at his/her discretion, but rather as a privilege which shall be allowed only in case of personal sickness or disability or in the case of illness in the immediate family. 2.In order to be granted sick leave with pay, Personnel must: a.Notify his/her immediate supervisor within three hours of the beginning of the scheduled work day of the reason for such employee's absence. b.Require a doctor’s note and Permit such medical examination, nursing visit, or inquiry which the Department deems appropriate for absences for three (3). c.File a written request for such sick leave prior to or immediately upon return to work on the form and in the manner prescribed. Submit where reasonable and if requested, a medical certificate signed by a physician stating that he/she is again physically able to perform his/her duties. B.LATE 1.It is the policy of this Department that all employees will report to begin their scheduled work day on time and be prepared to begin their assigned duties without delay. 2.When an employee realizes he/she will be late for work, he/she must: a.Notify his/her immediate supervisor. b.Notification will be made as soon possible when the employee realizes he/she will be late. C.REPORTING PROCEDURES Page 1 of 2 1.Employees calling in sick or late will follow the procedures outlined in sections A and B. 2.The employee calling in will request the name of the person taking the message. 3.When receiving such a call the employee will give the caller their name and immediately forward the message, including the caller's name, ID Number, and the time received to the appropriate supervisor. 4.Supervisor's who encounter the situation where an employee is not present as scheduled will make every effort to determine if that employee has called in a sick/late message prior to calling his/her residence. D.MONITORING AND DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES 1.When an employee reports late for duty it will be the responsibility of the employee's immediate supervisor to indicate the date of the lateness, the employee's name, the number of minutes late, the reason for the lateness and whether the reason is acceptable or unacceptable. As an example, assisting a citizen, and advising over the radio, is acceptable. A road closure traffic jam as the result of a traffic crash is acceptable. Everyday normal traffic and/or oversleeping would be deemed unacceptable. 2.The fourth unacceptable late for duty in the previous 12 months will result in disciplinary action. Additional violations may result in further disciplinary action. Page 2 of 2
