University of California, San Francisco Police Department General Orders 4.11 Missing Persons Investigations 4.11.2 Runaway Juveniles (Issued: 6/25/07) A. The officer handling a runaway juvenile case will gather all information regarding the runaway needed to file the appropriate reports, including subject description and circumstances surrounding the disappearance, to complete an incident report, and all information needed to complete a California Department of Justice Missing Persons System (MUPS) entry. A recent picture of the juvenile should also be obtained if available. 1. If the officer is given sufficient information on the juvenile’s whereabouts, he/she will make a reasonable effort to locate the juvenile. B. The officer will ensure the runaway juvenile information is entered into MUPS as s oon as possible after taking the report but no later than the end of the investigator’s current shift if the juvenile has not been located. C. The Investigations Unit Sergeant will review all runaway juvenile reports and assign follow -up investigations as appropriate on the basis of the circumstances in the report. D. The runaway juvenile information will be cleared from MUPS when: 1. The juven ile has been located or 2. The juvenile is no longer considered to be a runaway.
