University of California, San Francisco Police Department General Orders 4.7 Patrol Operations: Vehicle Equipment and Uniform 4.7.10 Protective Vests (Revised: 6/7/25 ) A. Protective vests are provided to all sworn officers , with consideration given to physical characteristics , height, weight and role . B. Police officers, sergeants and lieutenants will wear protective body armor at all times when in uniform and/or operating a police bicycle and keep the armor readily available for use when on duty or on call. C. All personnel will wear a protective vest when participating in a pre -planned tactical operation that may expose them to risk of life or injury. This includes planned executions of warrants, drug -related raids, surveillance operations, undercover operations and decoy operations. D. If not provided by the manufacturer, the Department will provide sworn officers with information on protective vest hygiene and care. Vest longevity is five years from the date of manufacture, unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer.
