University of California, San Francisco Police Department General Orders 1 4.5 Patrol: Organization and Administration 4.5.7 Shift Rotations (Revised: 5/29/25 ) It is in the interest of the University and the Police Department to have alert, well -rested officers working regular and overtime shifts. Tired officers potentially increase the risk of accidents, reduce ab ility to respond in emergencies and increase sick leave rates. The Police Department shall maintain limits on overtime work to minimize the likelihood of increased risk to the health and safety of officers. A. Police officers in the Patrol Unit and public safety d ispatchers shall rotate shifts at regular, six-month intervals, in April and October of each year. 1. During a ny given 24-month period, officers in the Patrol Unit shall not be on the same shift for more than three consecutive six -month rotations (1 8 months) . In this case, t he fourth rotation must be on a team with different working days and/or different hours (e.g., movin g from Blue to Red and/or Swings to Days ). a. If an officer works the same hours for three consecutive rotations, he/she must work different hours during the fourth rotation . b. It is permissible for an officer to rotate to a new shift more often than outlined above , provi ded his/her schedule involves a change in working hours at least once every four rotations . 2. Dispatchers shall rotate through all shifts within a 24 -month period or as directed by union contract .
