CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW NEXT REVIEW 4 01/24/2011 06/01/201 9 06/01/20 21 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES SS466 - Call Taker Response to Aircraft Accidents 1 SS466 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS SS466.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This procedure establishes guidelines for handling aircraft accident calls. SS466.1.2 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This procedure pertains to the following CALEA Standards: N/A This p rocedure pertains to the following General Orders: §406, §434, §802 SS466.2 PROCEDURE The response to an aircraft accident can by it s magnitude and danger be considered a “critical incident .” SS466.2.1 CALL TAKING There are several questions a call taker should ask in order to obtain as much information as possible for an aircraft accident: a) Was the airplane able to land? If so, where? If not , and it is believed to have crashed, what is the location? b) Did it strike any buildings, vehicles or pedestrians? c) What is the size of the aircraft? A small airplane that seats two is much different than a commercial airliner that seats 200. d) What type of ai rcraft is it? 1. Civilian? (a) Helicopter? (b) Jet? (c) Private aircraft? 2. Military? (a) Helicopter? (b) Jet? 3. Commercial Airliner? e) Is the aircraft on fire? Is it smoking? f) Are there any structures (residential or commercial) involved ? Are there any structures threatened or dam aged? g) Does the caller know if there are any immediate injuries? h) Can the caller read the tail number (It starts with an “N”) ? i) Enter the call for service using the call type “ 903.” Notify Orange County Fire Authority. The primary officer and the supervisor should be dispatched code 3. b) If a civilian aircraft is involved, the Fire Department normally notifies the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and th e NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board).
