SS464.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This procedure establishes guidelines for handling train accident calls.

SS464.2 PROCEDURE
A train accident will, in most cases , generate multiple calls from citizens passing by. Screening
of the calls is essential to determine the extent of the incident, the necessary response, and any
potential witness information the callers may have regarding the accident or derail ment .
SS464.2.1 CALL TAKING
In the event of a train accident or derailme nt, attempt to get the answers to these questions:
a) Did the train derail or crash? If the train crashed , what did it crash into?
b) Is this a passenger train or freight train?
c) How many train cars appear to be involved?
d) Does the caller know if there are any immediate injuries?
e) Is the train on fire or leaking any fluids that the caller(s) can see?
f) Is this close to a residential neighborhood or a commercial area?
Enter a call for service using the call type “ 901T .” Notify Orange County Fire Authority.
SS464.3.1 DISPATCHING THE CALL
a) Dispatch a minimum of three officers and a supervisor. The primary officer and supervisor
should be dispatched code 3.
b) Notify Santa Fe Railroad , Amtrak or Metrolink depending on which train is involved.
c) Depending on the size of the incident, the Watch Commander may request assistance from
outside agencies.
