CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW NEXT REVIEW 4 01/24/2011 06/01/201 9 06/01/20 21 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES SS452 - Call Taker Response to Hit and Run Collisions 1 SS452 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO HIT AND RUN COLLISIONS SS452.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This procedure establishes guidelines for handling hit and run collision calls. SS452.1.1 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This procedure pertains to the following CALEA Standards: N/A This p rocedure pertains to the following General Orders: §502 This procedure pertains to the following Standard Operating Procedure: CP502 SS452.2 PROCEDURE Since a hit and run is a crime, we will take a report whether it occurred on public or private property. If a note is left on the victim’s vehicle by the other driver which identifies him or herself, it is not a hit and run. The other party has complied with the law prior to leaving the scene. However if a note is left that contains misinformation, the incident would be considered a hit and run. SS452.2.1 CALL TAKING When taking a hit and run collision call, the following information should be obtained: a) Where did the hit and run occur? b) Are there injuries? c) How long ago? d) Suspect vehicle description with license plate and direction of travel e) Enter the call for service using the call type “ 480” if there are injuries, “ 481” for non -injury and “ 483” if it is hit and run to a parked unoccupied vehicle. f) If there is a time delay and this is a report only, use the same call types with an “ R” after the call type . g) Where should the damage be to the suspect vehicle? h) Obtain a description of the driver of the v ehicle . i) Is the caller a victim, or a witness? j) Description and location of the victim vehicle and if they are blocking the roadway . k) Name and phone number of calling party and note in CAD if they are the victim or witness in case an officer needs additional information. If no traffic officer is available, dispatch at least two patrol officers to the location and additional if needed for traffic control and to check the area for the suspect vehicle. Also dispatch Orange County Fire Authority for the injured party. b) If this is an accident where injuries are unknown, dispatch a minimum of two officers (traffic officer if available) “code 1” to the location and additional if needed for traffic control and to check the area for the suspect vehicle. c) If this is a non -injury traffic collision, dispatch a traffic officer, PSO, or a patrol officer if traffic or PSO are not available. Dispatch additional units if needed for traffic control or if the vehicles are blocking the roadway and to check the area for the suspect vehicle.
