CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW NEXT REVIEW 4 01/24/2011 06/01/20 19 06/01/2021 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES SS450 - Call Taker Response to Traffic Collisions 1 SS450 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO TRAFFIC COLLISIONS SS450.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This procedure establishes guidelines for handling calls regarding traffic collisions . SS450.1.1 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This Procedure pertains to the following CALEA Standards: N/A This Procedure relates to the following General Orders: §502 This procedure pertains to the following Standard Operating Procedure: CP502 SS450.2 PROCEDURE The Police Department does not take traffic collision reports for non -injury accidents that occur on private property. We will dispatch a unit if they request assistance in the exchange of information or if there is a dispute between the parties involved . SS450.2.1 CALL TAKING a) Ask the caller where the collision occurred. If it is in front of a business or address, obtain the business name or address. If not known , obtain the cross streets. b) Ask if there are any injuries c) Enter the call for service as “ 901” if injuries are unknown, “ 901T ” for confirmed injuries or “902T ” if non injury. d) If there are injuries, contact OCFA to respond and note it in the CAD comments. e) How many vehicles are involved and descriptions of the vehicles f) What type of accident? Vehic le vs. vehicle, vehicle vs. pedestrian, vehicle vs. bicycle? g) If the collision is non -injury, find out if the vehicles are blocking the roadway. h) Did the caller witness the accident? If so, be sure to get their name and contact number and note it in the CAD comments. i) If the accident involved a school bus and there are children on the bus, notify the California Highway Patrol to respond for the report. SS450.3.1 DISPATCHING THE CALL a) If this is an injury accident, dispatch a patrol unit “code 3” along with a traffic officer to take the report. If no traffic officer is available, dispatch at least two patrol officers to the location and additional if needed for traffic control. b) If this is an accident where injuries are unknown, dispatch a minimum of two officers (traffic officer if available) “code 1” to the location and additional if needed for traffic control. Dispatch additional units if needed for traffic control or if the vehicles are blocking the roadway.
