CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW NEXT REVIEW 3 01/24/2011 06/01/201 9 12/01/20 20 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES SS448 - Call Taker Response to Stolen Vehicle Calls 1 SS448 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO STOLEN VEHICLE CALLS SS448.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This procedure establishes guidelines for handling stolen vehicle calls. SS448.1.2 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This procedure pertains to the following CALEA Standards: N/A This p rocedure pertains to the following General Orders: N/A SS448.2 CALL TAKING PROCEDURE If a call of a stolen vehicle is received, obtain the following information: SS448.2.1 JUST OCCURRED a) Ask the caller where the vehicle was taken from. Address, business name or cross street. b) When was the vehicle taken or last seen? If the vehicle theft just occurred , enter the call immediately using the call type 503 and in the NOI (Nature of Incident) field , enter just occurred . c) Obtain a description of the vehicle including license plate and any visible identifying information , i.e., lifted, chrome wheels, sticker in window. d) Direction of travel ? e) Suspect description ? f) Any weapons in volved? g) Were the keys with the vehicle? SS448.2.2 REPORT ONLY a) Ask the caller where the vehicle was taken from. Address, business name or cross street. b) When was the vehicle last seen? c) Obtain a description of the vehicle including the license plate . d) Are your payments current? e) Was it legally parked? f) Do you know who took it? g) Does anyone else have a key? Also, check with records to see if it has been called in and not yet entered into SVS. j) Enter the call for service as 503R. SS448.3 DISPATCHING THE CALL SS448.3.1 JUST OCCURRED a) Dispatch a minimum of two officers; one to do an area check and one to contact the victim. b) Broadcast the vehicle description including the license plate and direction of travel to field personnel. c) Notify the Watch Commander to see if he/she wants a Red Channel broadcast. SS448.3. 2 REPORT ONLY Dispatch a police service s officer if available. If a PSO is not available, dispatch an officer to the caller’s location.
