1 SS446 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO ABANDONED VEHICLE
REPORTS
SS446.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This procedure est ablishes guidelines for answering calls related to abandoned vehicles.

SS446.2 PROCEDURE
State law does not allow for a vehicle to be parked on a public street for more than 72 hours
without being moved.
The 72-hour time frame begins at the time the officer marks the vehicle. The Police Department
cannot enforce the 72-hour violation in pr ivate condominium or apartment complexes. The
property management company or leasing office would have to contact a private tow to remove
the vehicle as a private party impound. This rule is the same also for shopping centers or business
parking lots.
SS446.2.1 CALL TAKING
a) Ask the caller where the vehicle is parked
b) Obtain the vehicle description and if possible a license plate number. Run the vehicle
through CLETS for wants.
c) If the vehicle has been reported as stolen, enter the call using the call type “ 22651C ”. Ask
the caller if they saw anyone near the vehicle or noticed when the vehicle arrived at the
location.
d) If the vehicle is not reported as stolen, enter the call using the call type “ 917A ”.
SS446.3.1 DISPATCHING THE CALL
a) Dispatch a PSO to check the vehicle and possibly mark for 72-hour violation.
b) If no PSO is on duty, an officer should be assigned to mark the vehicle as calls for service
allow .
