SS438 - Call Taker Response to Burglary Calls 1 SS438 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO BURGLARY CALLS
SS438.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This procedure establishes guidelines for handling burglary calls.
SS438.1.1 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS
This Procedure pertains to the following CALEA Standards: N/A
This Procedure relates to the following General Orders: N/A
SS438.2 PROCEDURE
Burglary is defined as entering any structure or locked vehicle with the intent to commit petty or
grand theft or any other felony .
SS438.2.1 CALL TAKING (COMMERCIAL/RESIDENTIAL/SCHOOL)
When taking a call of a burglary the following information should be asked:
a) In progress or just occurred:
1. What is the location? If it is a business, what is the name of the business?
2. If the caller does not know the exact address, have them advise where it is in relation
to where they are calling from (how many doors down, across the street, etc .).
3. Description of suspect(s) .
4. Did they see any weapons?
5. Enter the call using the c all type 459 with the limited information and enter additional
information as it is received.
6. Direction of travel of suspect(s) and a vehicle description if they left in a vehicle.
7. What does the building back up to? (to establish possible escape routes)
8. Keep the caller on the line until the officers are on scene to update the officers on the
suspect(s) activity.
9. Are there any unfamiliar cars parked in the area that the suspect(s) may have arrived
in?
10. Get the caller’s name, address and phone number.
b) If a report only:
1. What is the location?
2. Time element ?
3. The loss ?
4. The point of entry if known.
5. Has the caller been inside the location to ensure there are no suspects still inside?

SS438 - Call Taker Response to Burglary Calls 2 6. Enter the call using the call type 459RR for a residence, 459CR for a commercial
business, or 459SCH for a school.
SS438.2.2 DISPATCHING THE CALL
a) In progress or just occurred:
1. Dispatch a minimum of two officers immediately .
2. Update responding officers as more information becomes available.
b) If a report only:
1. If the business or residence has not been cleared, or the caller has not been inside
to know that no suspects are still on scene, dispatch two officers to the location to
clear the building.
2. If no suspects are still on scene, a Police Services Officer can be dispatched to take
the report. If no PSO is available, dispatch an officer.
SS43 8.2.3 CALL TAKING (VEHICLE)
When taking a call of a vehicle burglary the following information should be asked:
a) If occurring now or just occurred:
1. What is the location?
2. Description of the victim vehicle .
3. Exactly where it is parked (to help determine from which direction the officers should
respond) .
4. Description of the suspect?
5. Suspect vehicle .
6. Direction of travel?
7. Keep the caller on the line until officers are on scene to update the officers on the
suspect(s) activity.
8. Enter the call using the call type 459V .
b) If a report only:
1. What is the location?
2. Time element .
3. The loss?
4. The method of entry?
5. Description of victim vehicle .
6. Exactly where it is parked (carport number, parki ng space?)
7. If in a business parking lot, what is the name of the business, and where in the lot?
8. Enter the call using the call type 459VR
Remember, the vehicle must be locked for it to be a burglary. If the vehicle was not locked, it is
a petty or grand theft depending on the amount of the loss.

a) In progress or just occurred:
1. Dispatch a minimum of two officers immediately.
