CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW NEXT REVIEW 3 01/24/2011 06/01/201 9 12/01/2020 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES SS436 - Call Taker Response to Petty Theft (488) And Grand Theft (487 ) 1 SS436 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO PETTY THEFT (488) AND GRAND THEFT (487) SS436.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This procedure establishes guidelines for handling petty theft and grand theft calls. SS436.1.2 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This procedure pertains to the following CALEA Standards: N/A This procedure pertains to the following General Orders: §802 SS436.2 PROCEDURE SS436.2.1 CALL TAKING a) Ask the caller where the theft occurred. If the theft was from a vehicle, ask where the vehicle was parked when the theft occurred and use that location for the CAD incident ; b) Ask the caller when the crime occurred. If this is an in progress call, enter a call for service as soon as possible usi ng the call type 488 (petty theft), 488V (petty theft from vehicle), 487 (grand theft), or 487V (grand theft from vehicle) . If this is a report call only, enter a call for service using the call type 488R , 488VR, 487R , or 487VR ; c) Ask the caller what was taken ; d) Ask the caller the approximate value of the items stolen. Anything over $ 950 is considered a grand theft ; e) Ask the caller if they have any suspect information. I f this is in progress , obtain as much of a suspect description as possible ; f) If this is in progress , obtain a direction of travel on the suspects ; g) If the theft is from a vehicle , obtain a description of the vehicle including the license plate number if known. SS436.3.1 DISPATCHING THE CALL (IN PROGRESS) a) Dispatch a minimum of two units to the call . One w ill make contact with the victim if possible and one will do area checks for the suspect ; b) If appropriate, BOLO the information to outside agencies. SS436.3.2 DISPATCHING THE CALL (NOT IN PROGRESS) Dispatch a Police Services Officer to th e call. If there is no PSO available, dispatch an officer.
