SS426.2 PROCEDURE
SS426.2.1 CALL TAKING
If you receive a call of a prowler , obtain the following information:
a) Obtain the address where the prowler is located.
b) Did the caller actually see someone or just hear them?
c) If the prowler was seen , obtain as much of a description as possible including if anything
was seen in the prowlers hands , i.e., tools, weapons . Did the prowler know the caller
saw him/her?
d) If they are only hearing noises , ask them where they are hearing the noises from , i.e.,
outside the house near the gate, inside the garage, inside the house, etc. If the noises
were coming from the garage, does the garage have a ma in door into the house?
e) Ask them if they are expecting anyone else home?
f) Ask the caller if he /she or anyone in the house is armed.
g) Ask the caller for their exact location within the residence. Upstairs? Downstairs?
Bedroom? Closet? Ask the caller if they feel safe in that location. If the caller does not
feel safe where they are , instruct them to go to wherever they would feel safe as long as
it does not jeopardize their safety and request that they take the phone with them. If
they do not want to talk for fear the prowler will hear them, ask them to keep the phone
line open and do not hang up. This is so you can still listen for anything that may be
happening inside.
h) Are there any animals, inside or outside?
i) Are there any hazards in th e backyard? Pool, spa, clothesline?
j) Can the caller still see the person, or hear the noises?
k) If the caller advises there is someone checking the outside of the location , obtain a
description of th e subject and ask whether or not they have a weapon. This is helpful so
the officers do not mistake them for the prowler.
Keep the caller on the line until officers arrive. Advise the caller that the officers will be checking
