SS422 - Call Taker Response to Suspicious Person(s) or Vehicles 1 SS422 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO SUSPICIOUS
PERSON(S) OR VEHICLES
SS422.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This procedure establishes guidelines for handling suspicious person(s) or vehicle(s) calls.

SS422.2 PROCEDURE
Alert citizens are important to kee ping our community safe. If the incident is important enough
for the citizen to call the police, call takers should demonstrate conce rn while taking these calls.
These types of call s often lead to the apprehension of individuals or prevention of se rious crime.
SS422.2.1 CALL TAKING
a) Ask the caller where the suspicious activity is occurring. Obtain address and/or street
name(s).
b) What exactly is happening that is suspicious? What are the subjects doing or why is the
vehicle suspicious?
c) Obtain a description of the subject(s) and/or vehicle(s) involved.
d) If the caller is reporting a suspicious vehicle, ask if the vehicle is occupied. If so, by how
many subjects?
e) Ask how long the subject(s) or vehicle(s) have been there.
f) Enter the call for service a s either 925 for a suspicious person, 925C for a suspicious
occupied vehicle or 925V for a suspicious unoccupied vehicle.
g) If the subjects leave the area prior to the officers’ arrival , obtain a direction of travel.
SS422.3 DISPATCHING THE CALL
a) Dispatch at least two officers to the location of the suspicious activity.
b) If there is a vehicle involved and a license plate number is given, run the plate for wants
and check for previous contacts in RMS.
