SS420 - Requests for Keep the Peace 1 SS420 REQUESTS FOR KEEP THE PEACE
SS420.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This procedure establishes guidelines for handling requests to keep the peace calls for service .

SS420.2 PROCEDURE
An officer will be dispatched to a request to keep the peace for the purposes of preventing a
violent confrontation between involved parties. The officer will not permit removal of property
that is contested unless proper documents of ownership are presented. A keep the peace call
may also be requested for child custody issues if the reporting party has proper documentation
and believes there is going to be a problem unless law enforcement is present. Being a full
service agency, an officer will be dispatched , if requested , and the officer can determine what , if
any, action should be taken.
SS420. 2.1 CALL TAKING
When taking a keep the peace call, the call taker should:
a) Obtain the address where the caller wants the officer to go ;
b) What is the reason that an officer needs to stand by? Picking up personal items or a
child? Officers will only stand by long enough for someone to pick up personal items
such as clothing, medication, personal hygiene items, etc. Officers will not stand by so
someone can “move” out ;
c) Are there any restraining orders in effect? We will not respond on a ke ep the peace call
for persons with valid restraining orders unless an extreme extenuating circumstance
exists ;
d) Obtain the name of the person that will be at the location that the reporting party wants
to go to. We will not go to the location unless there is someone there that is responsible
for the property (house, apartment, business) . When in doubt, send an officer to
determine what action can be taken ;
e) Have the reporting party stand by in front of or near the location. Obtain their vehicle
description including license plate number if possible;
f) Enter the call for service using the call type 919.

SS420 - Requests for Keep the Peace 2 SS420.2.2 DISPATCHING THE CALL
The Communications Officer should:
a) Dispatch a minimum of two officers to the location of the reporting party ;
b) Check the destination address for any prior contacts or information of which the officer
should be aware , including any restraining orders in effect for the location or persons
involved if known .
