SS412 - Call Taker Response to Robbery 1 SS412 CALL TAKER RESPONSE TO ROBBERY
SS412.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This procedure establishes guidelines for handling robbery calls.

SS.412.2 PROCEDURE
Robbery is defined in California Penal Code Section 211 as “the felonious taking of personal
property in the possession of another, from his person or immediate presence, and against his
will, accomplished by means of force or fear.” Often times, a person calls in a robbery when it is
actually a burglary. Proper questioning will help determine if a robbery actu ally occurred.
SS412.2.1 CALL TAKING
When taking a call of a robbery in progress or just occurred , the following information should be
asked:
a) Where did this occur? If not in Tustin, transfer the call to the correct agency. If it
occurred at a business, be sure to get the business name. While the Automated
Location Information (ALI) on the 911 display is typically accurate, the dispatcher still
must confirm the location showing is the correct location and this is where the crime
occurred ;
b) Was there a weapon involved? Or was it by force, such as a purse snatch? If there was
a weapon, what type of weapon? Where did the suspect put the weapon w hen leaving?
Did you actually see a weapon, or did the suspect simply say he had one?
c) Did this just occur?
d) Enter the call for service as 211;
e) Did the suspec t leave on foot or in a vehicle? If in a vehicle , obtain the vehicle
description and last know n direction of travel ;
f) Description of suspect. In addition to a basic description, be sure to ask about hats,
glasses, facial hair, tattoos, accent in speech, or any other identifiable feature ;
g) What was the loss? What was it placed in? If it is a bank r obbery, was a dye pack, bait
money or ETS put in the bag?
h) Is anyone injured?
i) Reassure the caller that officers are on their way ;
j) Advise the caller not to touch anything that the suspect may have touched so that we
may collect fingerprints or DNA .

SS412.3 DISPATCHING THE CALL
As with any emergency call, and at the discretion of the dispatcher based on the information
provided, the dispatcher may activate the alert tone before putting the call over the radio. This
ensures that the officers are prepared to c opy the emergency call. The initial dispatch should
be at least three officers. Continue updating responding officers with additional information as it
becomes available.
