CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW NEXT REVIEW 4 01/24/2011 06/01/201 9 06/01/ 2021 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES SS318 - Use of TTY/TDD Telephone Software 1 SS318 USE OF TTY/TDD TELEPHONE SOFTWARE SS318 .1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This procedure establishes guidelines for use of TTY/TDD Telephone Software. SS318 .1.2 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This procedure pertains to the following CALEA Standards: N/A This procedure pertains to the following General Order(s): §802 SS318 .2 PROCEDURE TTY is an abbreviation for teletypewriter. TDD is an abbreviation for telecommunications device for the deaf . These terms are commonly used to describe calls received from hearing impaired persons. TTY software has been installed in the Communications C enter on the phone consoles. Communications Officers s hould familiarize themselves with the TTY software and i ts use. Below are basic instructions for the TTY. How to Answer a TTY call from all lines, including 9 -1-1: a) Press the TTY button located on the right side of the Vesta phone display ; b) When the TTY window pops up press “ Detect TTY ” to enable the TTY software ; c) You can use the preformatted questions or type your own using the keyboard located below the display monitor (copy attached) ; d) Remember to end each sentence with “ga” so the caller knows it’s his/her turn to type (“ga” means go ahead ); e) When the ca ll is finished type “sksk” to indicate the end of the call. (“sksk” means stop keying ); f) Press close to return your screen to “normal” position . The incoming call will ring just like a normal call. When you answer the phone, you should hear a “tweedling” so und which will indicate a TTY call. If you don’t hear the “tweedling”, have a dead line or you are unable to hear a caller State Law Requires Dispatch personnel to “sample” the call for a possible TTY caller by manually starting the TTY software. SS318.2. 1 ATTACHMENT The attached photograph s show the on -screen display of preformatted TTY questions.
