CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW 1 05/02/2016 05/0 1/2022 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES PS122 – Sleep Rooms 1 PS122 SLEEP ROOM PS122.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE The Police Department has provided a location designated for Department personnel to sleep or rest following extended working hours, court appearances, or other work -related activities making it difficult for personnel to return to their home to sleep. Thi s program will assist employees to better utilize their professional and personal time, mutually benefiting the employee and the Department by providing employees the ability to receive adequate rest prior to resuming their duties. These rooms are not desi gned for long term stays and shall only be used as directed by this S.O.P. PS122.1.2 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This p rocedure pertains to the following CALEA Standards: N/A This procedure pertains to the following General Orders: N/A PS122.2 USE OF SLE EP ROOMS The Sleep Room may be used by employees in the following situations: a) There is insufficient time to return home for rest prior to returnin g to duty or appearing in court; b) An emergency or unusual occurrence which precludes the employee from leaving the station to return home for rest; c) An ongoing investigation which requires an employee to be at the station for an extended period of time (usually beyond 16 hours); d) Field personnel whom a supervisor has determined are t oo fatigued to continue wo rking; e) For rest periods, with supervisor approval. PS122.3 PROCEDURE There is one Sleep Room located on the first floor in the west hallway. The Sleep Room is located across from the Fleet Office closest to the rear emergency exit . Each Sleep Room is for use by either male or female employees. The rooms shall be available on a “first come, first served” basis. Prior to usage, employees shall obtain the on -duty Watch Commander’s authorization and advise Communications they will be using the Sleep Room. Employees shall sign in on the Sleep Room Log in the Watch Commander’s Office. Employees shall place bedding on a bed prior to using it for rest or sleeping. The Department shall provide bedding for each employee utilizing the Sleep Room. Employees may also use a sleeping bag in place of sheets. Bedding shall consist of: a) Fitted Sheet ; b) Flat Sheet ; c) Blanket; d) Pillow; e) Pillow Case . When finished using the Sleep Room, it shall be the responsibility of the employee to remove all used bedding and place it in the hamper provided in the room. All personal items or bedding shall be removed from the Sleep Room. Employees who use a Sleep Room will be responsible to leave the room in the same or better conditi on than found. When leaving the Sleep Room, the employee will notify the Watch Commander and Communications to advise they have vacated the Sleep Room. The employee will also be required to sign out on the Sleep Room Log. PS122.4 REGULATIONS AND PROHIBITIONS a) Personnel shall remain modestly clothed while using the Sleep Rooms. Sleeping attire should minimally include gym style shorts and a tee shirt or Lycra type exercise top. This includes when the employee temporarily leaves the sleep room, i.e. to use the restroom; b) Department personnel without authorization shall not enter the Sleep Room to visit or communicate with authorized personnel using the rooms; c) The Sleep Room is a City facility and as such, all City and Police Department rules apply. Per sonnel shall be particularly courteous of others using the Sleep Rooms; d) The Sleep Rooms are not to be utilized as Lactation Rooms, storage areas or other unintended uses; e) Food is not permitted in the Sleep Room . Water and other beverages are permitted; f) The use of alcohol is not permitted in the Sleep Room ; g) Smoking is not permitted within the Sleep Room or adjacent areas; h) Alarm clocks are provided and personnel using the Sleep Room shall be responsible for their own wake -up time; i) The storage of clothing, bedding, or other personal items shall not be permitted in the Sleep Room beyond the duration of its immediate use; j) The Sleep Room shall not be used by anyone other than Police Department personnel; k) The Sleep Room shall not be used on a regular basis b y employee s wishing to avoid commuting.
