STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES
PS118 - Employee Career Development 1 PS118 EMPLOYEE CAREER DEVE LOPMENT
PS118.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The purpose of this procedure is to establish the guidelines for career development activities for
all employees. Personnel transferred to new assignments requiring specific skills should receive
the appropriate training for the assignment based on the Department Training Matrix.
Personnel in supervisory assignments, and employees assigned to conduct career developme nt
activities including training and counseling; or employees required to assess techniques or skills
of others; will be required to attend courses designed to increase their training and knowledge to
perform such duties. The training should be designed to enhance the employee’s technical
expertise and overall effectiveness which will in turn be reflected in those individuals they train
or assess .

PS118.2 TRAINING REQUIREMENT S
Upon promotion or assignment change , personnel shall be sent to the appropriate training
course (s) that will provide the employee with the proper skills and knowledge to effectively guide
and mentor personnel under their direct control. As required, personnel should be sent to
training that will update or enhance their skills. The Training Matrix should be used as a
reference when considering any employee trainin g needs.
PS118.3 EDUCATION
All employees are encouraged to seek out their own personal educational needs through local
community colleges and universities. When appropriate, employees are encouraged to
participate in the Career Officer Program.
