CP510 .1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This procedure governs the use of speed measuring devices in traffic law enforcement.

CP510.2 DEFINITIONS
RADAR – Radio detection and ranging.
LIDAR – Light detection and ranging.
CP510 .3 RADAR/LIDAR PROCEDURES
The Tustin Police Department uses hand -held LIDAR devices. Each piece of equipment varies by
manufacturer. Employees who have obtained approved certification in the use of LIDAR are
authorized to operate them according to P.O.S.T. approved guidelines.
Each device is to be calibrated by an external vendor, as specified by the California Vehicle Code.
The traffic unit’s LIDAR coordinator will maintain these calibration records wit hin the Traffic Unit
office. Employees utilizing these devices sh all test the accuracy of the unit prior to use. The LIDAR
is tested by pressing the internal test button. If the equipment is damaged, not working properly , or
is displaying an error message , discontinue use of the equipment and notify the LIDAR
coordinator.
CP510 .4 CERTIFIED SPEEDOMETER
Officers are authorized to utilize the patrol vehicle speedometer for pacing violator vehicles to
enforce speed laws. Once a year, Tustin Police Departmen t patrol vehicle speedometers will be
calibrated and certified by the American Automobile Association (AAA) of California. The
certification records are maintained by the fleet coordinator and a copy of the certification will be
placed into each patrol veh icle for reference.
