Revised December 2019 Property and Evidence Cadet Training Manual Revised December 2019 Property and Evidence Cadet Training Manual Welcome to the property and evidence section. There will be 5 main tasks that you will be required to maintain and make your own. These 5 things are : 1. The weekly lab run, 2. Scanning all paperwork, 3. Upkeep and ordering of forms and certain supplies throughout the department, 4. Bike and Bike donations, and 5. Discovery Requests and Burning CD/DVDs. You will find that while these are your main resp onsibilities, there will be many numerous other tasks you will be asked to perform. However, during your training we will focus on these responsibilities. While these 5 things are your main responsibilities, you will be called upon to help out in the d aily tasks that are associated with Property and Evidence such as taking calls, property releases to the public as well as property releases to Police personnel. Each item will be mapped out in your training manual you will be required to master all these responsibilities. It is important that you retain all the information presented to you in your training and the ability to multi -task is essential. It is suggested you take notes are you go through your training process so that you will have them to r eference back to later. Any concerns you may have regarding your performance should be discussed with your Trainer or supervisor so that those can be alleviated. Your responsibilities and tasks are vital to not only the property room, but the police depa rtment operations. You should not take these responsibilities lightly. Revised December 2019 Phase One Orientation Your phase one training will consist of an orientation phase. The orientation includes a tour of the property and evidence facility, and a familiarization of all the basic office machines and the telephone system. The “Explained” Boxes are to be signed off by the trainer and the trainee and the “ Competent ” box should be signed off by the trainer when he/she feels you have demonstrated a competent knowledge of the item . You will learn how to log into the system and the basic operations needed to function within the system effectively. Additionally you will start putting this knowledge to practical use by le arning to update property entries. Item Explained Competent Log on/Log off Procedure Explanations of RMS functions Menus Quick Options UPROP Various Types of Property Updating Property Locations Checking Property Out Checking Property In Filing of Property Reports Revised December 2019 Phase Three: Telephone and Counter Protocol/Releasing Items to Owners During phase three of your training, you will learn how to answer phones and handle people at the front counter (this includes Police personnel and citizens at the front counter). You will learn how to go about releasing property to owners as well as the proper steps in determining if a person can get his property back. This will include the difference between found/safekeeping and evi dence and what to do in each case. You will learn how to use these skills to comply with the formal Discovery Requests that come from court. You will also lea rn how to print photos from the digital cameras. Additionally you will learn the procedure for completing a discovery request and how to scan paperwork into Laserfiche . This will include learning where to obtain the information on what to take. How to pull the items check them out and create a list of the items for the lab. You will also learn how to get to the lab. How to receive the items from the Orange County Crime Lab (OCCL), check the items back into our property room and put them away. You will also learn how to fill out a property report and tag for items that are coming straight from the lab to us for the first time.
