CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW NEXT REVIEW 4 01/24/2011 01/01/201 9 01/01/20 21 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT G ENERAL ORDERS ________________________________________________ 1030 - Employee Commendations and Recognition Awards 1 POLICY 1030 EMPLOYEE COMMENDATIONS AND RECOGNITION AWARDS 1030.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE Special recognition may be in order whenever an employee performs his/her duties in an exemplary manner. This policy provides general guidelines for the commending of exc eptional employee performance, including heroic action, bravery, courage, lifesaving, community service, performance, meritorious service and other significant achievements. Members of the department are encouraged to report all noteworthy acts involving e mployees of this or other law enforcement agencies, as well as those of private citizens. 1030.1.1 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This section pertains to the following CALEA Standards: 26.1.2 This section pertains to the following Standard Operating Proced ures: AD200 1030.1.2 DEFINITIONS a) COMMENDATIONS: A meritorious or commendable act by an employee of this department may include, but is not limited to, superior handling of a difficult situation by an employee ; conspicuous bravery or outstanding performan ce by any employee of the department ; any action or performance that is above and beyond the typical duties of an employee . b) MEDAL OF VALOR : This medal and accompanying uniform ribbon will be awarded only to a member of the Tustin Police Department who dem onstrates an outstanding act of individual courage or bravery while serving the community. c) MEDAL OF MERIT : This medal and accompanying uniform ribbon will be awarded to a citizen or to a member of the Tustin Police Department who demonstrates outstanding individual performance. This performance can be a specific incident or an ongoing series of events over any given period of time that benefits the Tustin Police Department or the Tustin community. d) DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD: This medal and accompanying uniform ribbon will be awarded to an employee of this department who displays superior handling of a difficult situation, conspicuous bravery or outstanding performance above and beyond the typical duties of an employee. e) LIFESAVING AWARD : This uniform rib bon will be awarded to an employee who assists in the saving of a human life. This can involve a rescue from imminent danger or a medical rescue where first aid rendered resulted in the saving of a life. f) COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD: This uniform ribbon will be awarded to employees who go beyond traditional policing to solve problems within the community. This award can CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW NEXT REVIEW 4 01/24/2011 01/01/201 9 01/01/20 21 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT G ENERAL ORDERS ________________________________________________ 1030 - Employee Commendations and Recognition Awards 2 include employees who have been recognized by the community or professional organizations for service to the community. g) C.T.A.P.S ACHIEVEMENT AWARD : This uniform ribbon will be awarded to a member of the Tustin Police Department who demonstrates outstanding performance in regards to fulfilling the mission of the Crime, Traffic Analysis and Policing Strategies model of policing. This performance can be a specific incident or an ongoing series of events over any given period of time. 1030. 2 PROCEDURES 1030.2.1 WHO MAY MAKE COMMENDATIONS A written commendation may be made by any supervisor regarding any other employee of the department, provide d the reporting person is superior in rank or is the person in charge of the individual being commended. Additionally, investigating officers may commend employees for exceptional assistance in investigative functions, with approval from the investigator’s supervisor. Any employee may recommend a commendation to the supervisor of the employee subject to commendation. Citizens and representatives from other law enforcement agencies may also make commendations to any Tustin Police supervisor or manager . 1030. 2.2 MEDAL/AWARD NOMINATIONS Nominations for distinguished service awards shall be made by any member of the department who may have witnessed or has knowledge of a noteworthy act that deserves recognition. Nominations shall contain the date, time, p lace, and a detailed account of the act performed. Employees shall forward nominations to the service awards committee . 1030. 2.3 SELECTION AND PRESENTATION Commendations will be presented to the employee’s supervisor, sent through the chain of command for comment and the original returned to the employee. A copy of the commendation with administrative comments will be placed in the employee’s personnel file. The Award Review Committee will convene to consider those nominated for distinguished service awards. Members of the committee will be comprised of employees representing various units of the agency . The chairperson of the Award Review Committee shall select the members of the committee. Selection shall be based on availability and a desire to serve in such a capacity. The Award Review committee shall meet once a year to review and discuss each nomination.
