CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW 3 01/24/2011 08/0 5/2022 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT GENERAL ORDERS __________________ 521 - Police Traffic Escorts 1 POLICY 521 POLICE TRAFFIC ESCORTS 521.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This policy outlines the responsibilities for providing escort service s for emergency vehicles and privately -owned vehicles in medical emergencies , or planned events . 521.1.1 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This section pertains to the following CALEA Standards: 61.3.3 521.2 AUTHORITY AND PROCEDURE The Community Policing Bureau Commander or their designee may authorize non -emergency escorts for parades, dignitary secu rity, funeral processions of a public official or dignitary, special events, oversized loads, or as directed by the Chief of Police. Persons or organizations requesting escorts must possess appropriate permits and authorization as required by the City of Tustin. The police department shall participate in a review of all requests for these types of permits prior to their final approval , and will be responsible for the planning and coordinating of all requested escorts . The police department will not provide emergency escorts for emergency vehicles or privately - owned vehicles . In the event of a medical emergency, a medical unit will be requested . In a lifesaving situation, an officer may transport with their vehicle, only with the approval of a superviso r or Watch Commander.
