CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW 1 01/24/2011 05/11/2022 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT GENERAL ORDERS ________ _______ 312 - Firearms 1 POLICY 312 FIREARMS 312.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This policy establishes procedures for the acquisition, use, and documentation of training in the use of firearms and less lethal weapons . The Chief of Police or his /her designee shall approve all Department weapons before they are acquired and utilized by any member of this Department. 312.1.1 ACCREDITATION STANDARDS This section pertains to the following CALEA Standards: 1.2.2 , 1.3.9, 1.3.10, 1.3.11, 1.3.12, 4.3.1 , 4.3.2 , 4.3.3 , 4.3.5 , 16.1.6 , 16.3.6, 22. 2.1, 41.3.4 This policy pertains to the following Standard Operating Procedures: N/A 312.2 AUTHORIZED WEAPONS No firearm or less lethal weapon will be carried that ha s not been thoroughly inspected by the Rangemaster or his/her designee (hereafter refe rred as Rangemaster ). Except in an emergency, or as directed by a supervisor, no firearm or less lethal weapon shall be carried by a member who has not qualified with that weapon at an authorized Department range. 312.2.1 DUTY WEAPONS The primary department issued weapons consist of the Glock Model 17 (9mm) or the Glock Model 21 (.45 caliber). Additionally, the Glock Model 34 (9mm) and the Glock Model 45 (9mm) are authorized for duty carry if personally owned by an individual officer . The foll owing additional lethal and less lethal weapons are approved for on -duty use (department members who were issued/authorized to carry a Beretta 92F S or 92D or Glock 19 prior to 9/1/2015 are grandfathered under the previous policy) : MAKE MODEL CALIBER American Defense Mfg. The Rangemaster shall maintain a complete listing of all Department owned firearms by type, description, model and serial number; and to whom they are assigned and/or controlled. CATEGORY DATE ADOPTED LAST REVIEW 1 01/24/2011 05/11/2022 TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT GENERAL ORDERS ________ _______ 312 - Firearms 2 *See General Order s § 308 – Control Devices and Techniques and § 309 – Electro -Muscular Disruption Technology for additional on less lethal weapons. 312.2. 2 SECONDARY , BACKUP AND OFF-DUTY WEAPONS Secondary weapons may be carried by sworn officers in non -uniform assignments (e.g. Investigations) or by sworn officers in unifor m not assigned to patrol (e.g. Professional Standards, Administration , etc.). A backup weapon may be carried in addition to the use of a secondary weapon as listed above or in addition to a primary duty weapon. The carrying of weapons by sworn officers whi le off -duty is permitted by the Chief of Police, but may be rescinded should circumstances dictate (e.g. administrative leave). Sworn officers who choose to carry a secondary, backup or off -duty firearm will be required to meet the following guidelines: a) The weapon shall be chambered in .22 to .45 caliber , with a minimum 5 shot capacity ; b) The weapon shall be manufactured by either Colt, Smith & Wesson, Beretta, Glock, Heckler & Koch, Sig -Sauer, Ruger, Walther, Steyr, Desert Eagle, Springfield , or other quality firearms manufacturer as approved by a Department Rangemaster ; c) It will be the responsibility of the officer to submit the weapon to the Rangemaster for inspection prior to being carried on or off-duty. The Rangemaster shall assure that the officer i s proficient in handling and firing th e weapon and it will be carried in a safe manner . The weapon shall be subject to inspection whenever deemed necessary. The officer will successfully qualify with the weapon prior to it being carried and annually thereafter . The range qualification dates will be specified by the Rangemaster ; d) A complete description of the weapon(s) shall be contained on the qualification record approved by the Rang
