B-80 SUBJECT: GROOMING AND APPEARANCE INDEX AS: GROOMING AND APPEARANCE RESCINDS: REVISES: DATE REVISED : 08/26/2025 DISTRIBUTION ALL MEMBERS I. PURPOSE: The purpose of this directive is to establish guidelines for proper grooming and personal appearance. II. SCOPE: All members III. DISCUSSION: To ensure a continuation of the public's high regard for the Temple Terrace Police Department ’s integrity and pro fessionalism, it is imperative that a high standard of grooming and physical appearance be maintained by all our personnel. IV. PROCEDURE: A. Sworn Uniformed Male Employees: 1. Hairstyles shall be conservative and neatly trimmed. The length of the hair shall not exceed two (2) inches and shall be tapered proportionately along the sides and back of the head. The hair shall not extend downward over the shirt collar or over the ears. Dyed, tinted , or bleached hair must be within a natural color range, and must be professional in appearance. Wigs and hair pieces will not be worn while on duty or in uniform except for cosmetic reasons to cover natural baldness or physical disfiguration. If a wig is worn, it will conform to the hair style r egulation. Hair must be styled i n such a manner so that it does not interfere with the proper wearing of uniform headgear , or any specialized equipment assigned for use. 2. Sideburns shall be uniform and neatly trimmed from top to bottom, not exceeding one (1) inch in width. Sideburns will end with a clean -shaven horizontal line, not extending below the ear lobe and will not be excessively heavy or bushy. 3. Mustaches are authorized but shall be trimmed neatly so as not to present a bushy unkempt appearance. A mu stache shall not extend onto or over the upper lip, or beyond or below the corners of the mouth. ______________________________________________________________________ _______ General Order B -80 2 of 3 Grooming & Appearance 4. Beards and goatees are a. A beard or goatee can be grown throughout t he year. b. If a beard or goatee is grown, it shall be well -groomed and neatly trimmed in order not to present a ragged appearance. c. The beard or goatee shall not exceed ½ of an inch in length. d. If a member is not keeping their beard or goatee well-groomed and neatly trimmed at all times, they will be subject to possible disciplinary action in accordance with General Order B -3, Rules of Conduct. B. Sworn Uniformed Female Employees: 1. Hair shall be worn in styles that present a neat and professional appearance which do not interfere with the performance of normal duties and responsibilities associated with a specific assignment. 2. Hair may be gathered into a single bun, ponytail, braid or worn loose . In any case, the hair shall not extend past the shoulder line on the uniform (nor obscure the collar brass) when the officer is standing. Items used to hold the member’s hair away from her face must be functi onal and not decorative, and must match the co lor of the hair, or be of a conservative color. 3. Consideration should be given to hair being worn in a manner to prevent it from being grabbed. The hairstyle shall not interfere with the proper wearing of uniform headgear, or any specialized equipment assig ned for use. A wig may be worn but must conform to the stated grooming/safety standards. Dyed or colored hair must be of a conservative nature. 4. Female officers a. The accessories may vary in color but shall not include offensive material. b. There shall not be any bedazzling of nails. c. Small hoop earrings or up to two pair of small post earrings are permitted. 1) One pair of small hoop earrings along with one pair of small post earrings may also be simultaneously worn. d. If a member is not at all times abiding by the rules in this section, they will be subject to possible disciplinary action in accordance with General Order B -3, Rules of Conduct. C. Jewelry: 1. Members shall not have any body piercing that is visible to the public other than the stated guidelines for earrings. 2. Members may wear wedding rings, engagement rings, fraternity , or emblem rings, but only a maximum of three rings total may be worn. Watchbands will be of a conservative style, not generally wider than the face of the watch. Members may wear one bracelet. 3. Necklaces of any type shall not be worn with a uniform unless completely concealed at all times. 4. Earrings : a. The wearing of earring s by male uniformed sworn members is prohibited while on duty. b. Uniformed female members are authorized to wear s mall p ost-type earrings while on duty. c.
