B-25 SUBJECT: WEAPONS & AMMUNITION INDEX AS: SAME AS ABOVE RESCINDS: REVISES: B-25 DATE REVISED: 10/09/2025 DISTRIBUTION : SWORN MEMBERS I. PURPOSE : To identify department -approved weapons, provide standards for training and proficiency in the use of these weapons, and specify procedures for the proper maintenance and securi ty of department -issued weapons. II. SCOPE: All sworn members III. DISCUSSION : The department re quires sworn members to demonstrate competency in the use of authorized weapons by qualify ing with those weapons that may be carried and utilized whether o n-duty or off-duty in the member’ s official capacity as a sworn law enforcement member . IV. DEFINITIONS: A. Alternate Duty Handgun - Any authorized compact handgun to be used in place of the service firearm. B. Less -Lethal Weapons —Weapons that are primarily used to control a subject when a lethal response is not justified and an empty hand control technique is not sufficient. These weapons include the ASP baton, OC spray, conducted electrical weapons ( CEW ), and/or the 40mm launcher C. Off-Duty Firearms —Any authorized firearm carried off -duty by virtue of a sworn member’s position as a police member . D. Secondary Service Firearms - Department -authorized handguns , other than the issued service firearm, carried concealed by sworn members on their person while on -duty. E. Service Firearm – Department -issued 9mm Glock Model 45. V. PROCEDURE: A. While on duty, members will carr y their department -issued s ervice firearm, except when authorized by this general order or app roved by the Chief of Police. __________________________________________ __________________________ _______________________________ General Order -B-25 2 of 7 Weapons & Ammunition B. .Members will adhere to the following general rules at all times: 1. Treat all firearms as though they are loaded. 2. Do not point a firearm at anything unless deadly force is justified or as otherwise required during high-risk encounters . a. Always point a firearm muzzle in a safe direction when carrying. 3. Leave your firearm in the case, holster , or rack until needed. 4. Rest the trigger finger on the frame above the trigger until ready to fire. 5. Do not hand a loaded firearm to anyone except in a tactical emergency or when the need to do so is a matte r of training, i.e. , to fix a malfunction or inoperable weapon. 6. When receiving a firearm from another person, immediately verify it is unloaded. 7. Do not use unauthorized ammunition in a firearm. 8. Issued holsters with a safety strap or other retaining device will be fully engaged when the firearm is in the holster. a. Never use a holster in which the firearm does not fit. 9. Repair or cleaning of a firearm beyond “field stripping” (as described in the owner’s manual) should only be performed by an armorer trained by the appropriate manufacturer. 10. All firearms and ammunition will be stored in a secure location away from unauthorized persons. F.S.S. 790.174 11. Loaded firearms shall not be placed into long -term storage. 12. Replace service ammunition at least annually. 13. Duty-related firearms shall, at a minimum , be cleaned monthly and after any firearms training. a. Prior to cleaning, members shall ensure the firearm is unloaded. C. Only weapons and ammunition meeting agency approval may be carried by members during the performance of duty. 1. Under General Order (G.O.) B -25A, “Authorized Weapons and Ammunition List,” a list of department -authorized weapons and ammunition will be maintai ned. a. G.O. B -25A is accessible to all members via the PowerDMS software system . b. Individual fo lders pertaining to each member shall be maintained within the police department training folder. i. Each f older will contain a list of authorized weapons specific to the indi vidual member . 2. With the exception of secondary service firearms, o nly department -issued ammunition will be carried in weapons being utilized in an on -duty capacity. a. Only department -issued or approved ammunition will be carried in secondary service firearms utilized in an on -duty capacity. D. Members desiring to carry a weapon delineated within G.O. B-25A, which is not otherwise listed in their individual folder, shall submit a request on department memoranda to the Chief of Police or designee for approval. 1. Weapon requests shall , at a minimum, include the make, model, caliber, number of shots, barrel length , and reason for the request being made. a. If approval is granted and the member has complied with section V. D. of this G.O., the training coordinator will update the member’s individual training folder to include the newly authorized weapon . E.
