A. PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for traff ic direction and control.
B. POLICY
The City of Sunny Isles Beach Police Department shall perform t raffic direction and control functions when
necessary to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians within the City of Sunny Isles
Beach. Sworn members conducting tr affic direction and control s hall be trained according to the Criminal Justice
Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) while in attendance a t the Police Academy and during the
Department’s Field Training

C. SCOPE AND APPLICABILITY
This policy applies to all members of the Sunny Isles Beach Pol ice Department and any individual directing and/or
controlling traffic on behalf of the Sunny Isles Beach Police D epartment.

D. TRAFFIC ENGINEERING
1. Traffic engineering functions a re conducted in conjunction with the City of Sunny Isles Beach Public Works
Department, the Miami-Dade County Traffic Engineering Section, the Florida Department of Transportation
(DOT), and the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV) in Tallahassee. Sunny Isles Beach Police
Department activities include, but are not limited to the follo wing:
a. Collecting and compiling traffic data .
b. Conducting special traffic surveys and studies.
c. Analyzing traffic crash and enforcement data.
d. Preparing reports and making recommendations.
e. Participation in local and regional transportation system management planning.
2. The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department shall use the “ Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices " as a
guide for traffic engineering activities. This manual is avai lable from the U.S. Department of Transportation,
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and is maintained by the Miami-Dade County Public Works and
Traffic Engineering Section.
