PURPOSE To delineate responsibilities a nd conduct of supervisors within the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. B. SCOPE This policy shall apply to all department members in supervisor y or acting supervisory positions. C. POLICY It is the policy of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of supervisory personnel. This list is not all in clusive, as supervisors may b e required from time to time to p erform tasks or functions not specifically listed in this orde r to achieve the goals and obje ctives of the Chief of Police and/or the agency. D. DEFINITIONS Department – The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. Department Member – Any employee of the Sunny I sles Beach Police Department. Supervisor - Any person having charge of any section, subsection, squad, s hift, or other such un it will be considered a supervisor. This designation also includes those persons acting in such a capacity. Since supervision of subordinates is an integral function of command effectiveness, a department member shall also be considered a supervisor when assigned to supervise others. A supervisor is responsible for p erforming all general supervis ory duties in addition to having the technical skills and knowledge necessary to perform duties related to his /her specific assignment. He/she must constantly strive to improve his /her supervisory techniques thr ough study and practice. 2. Proposing Changes in Policy a. Supervisors shall initiate proposals for change in policy or de partment operations and shall solicit ideas from his/her subordinates. He/she shall forward suggestions thr ough the approved chain-of-command and give proper recognition to those subordinates that initiate the m. 3. Supervisory Knowledge of Agency Orders a. All supervisors are to be familiar with the content of the depa rtment’s general orders, policies and other orders and directives. 4. Organization of Activities a. A supervisor is responsible for organizing his/her work and the work of his/her subordinates per department policy. Supervisors are to ensure subordinates give maximum eff ort to their assigned tasks. He/she must be ready at all times for unusual or changing circumstances. 5. Knowledge of his/her Supervisory Positions a. A supervisor is to thoroughly acquaint himself/herself with dut ies and responsibilities of any supervisory position he/she may poten tially have to assume. 6. Delegation of Duties a. A supervisor may delegate to his/her subordinates the authority to perform certain tasks and advise them that they are responsible for successfully completing the assig nment, however, the supervisor remains accountable for such assignment at all times
