A. PURPOSE
The School Resource Officer is a fully certified officer who pr ovides a uniformed presence in schools to provide
security and education to the teachers and students assigned to the school.
B. POLICY
SIBPD may employ a School Resource Officer (SRO) through an agr eement with the Miami-Dade County Public
Schools. In addition, the Chief of Police or designee may autho rize the SRO to work extra duty details, as long as
the SRO has received appropriate training and the details do no t conflict with the obligations of the MDPCS
agreement. SRO’s are subject to applicable laws, policies, rule s and procedures including meeting training
requirements for CJSTC Mandatory Retraining.
Designated SIBPD Officers may be physically present and activel y participate in all active assailant drills.

C. SCOPE AND APPLICABILITY
The SRO is a member of SIBPD and shall be responsible for obeyi ng all applicable written directives. Department
members shall sign an electroni c receipt verifying they have re ad the directive(s) and/or any revisions of directives
by the due date. Members returning from an absence are respons ible for reading and complying with any directives
published during their absence. Department members shall be re sponsible for following all directives they have
received and will receive while employed by the Department.
D. SRO RESPONSIBILITIES
1. SROs shall be on duty during regular school hours in which stud ents are required to be in attendance, unless
precluded by law enforcement requirements or emergency circumst ances. SROs shall immediately notify the
Shift Sergeant if they must leave the school.
2. The SRO shall act at all times within the scope of authority gr anted to the SRO by app licable law and existing
agreements.
3. The SRO shall wear Class B uniforms daily unless otherwise appr oved by the Chief of Police or designee.
4. The SRO shall perform duties including, without limitation, the following:
a. The performance of law enforceme nt functions within the school setting.
b. The provision of assistance and support for crime victims, incl uding victims of abuse id entified within the
school setting.
c. The provision of assistance to the MDCPS in protecting and sec
