A. PURPOSE
The Police Reserve Officer Program provides additional trained uniformed and/or plainclothes personnel employing
full police powers as provided in §943.10(6) to further the eff orts of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department
during routine and emergency operations.
B. POLICY
The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department may utilize Reserve Off icers on a Reserve basis, employed less than full-
time, or employed on a short or long-term contract, vested with the authority to bear arms and make arrests and
whose primary responsibility is the prevention and detection of crime or the enforcement of the criminal, traffic, or
highway laws of the state. Reserve officers, when on or off-dut y, are subject to the same State and Federal laws,
policies, rules and procedures as SIBPD full-time police office rs.

C. DEFINITIONS
City - The City of Sunny Isles Beach.
Department – The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department.
Reserve Officer(s) - A Florida certified law enforcement officer employed or appo inted less than full-time, as
defined by an employing agency, with or without compensation, w ho is vested with authority to bear arms and
make arrests and whose primary responsibility is the prevention and detection of crime or the enforcement of penal,
criminal, traffic or highway l aws of the state [§943.10(6)].
Reserve Officer Commander – A reserve officer who is assigned to supervise the departmen t’s reserve officers.
D. SCOPE AND APPLICABILITY
This policy applies to all employees of the Sunny Isles Beach P olice Department.
E. COORDINATION AND SUPERVISION
1. The Chief of Police shall appoint a Reserve Officer Program Com mander from either full-time or reserve
officers.
2. The Reserve Officer Program Commander shall be supervised by th e Deputy Chief.
3. The Reserve Officer Program Commander shall serve as the coordi nator for the Reserve Officer Program and
shall be responsible for the following:
a. Coordinating recruitment and selection of reserve officers with the department’s Recruitment Team;
b. Coordinating reserve officer orie ntation and all related traini ng with the Training Sergeant;
