A. PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures for the t owing of vehicles, vessels and aircraft; the process of
placing and lifting a hold on a vehicle, vessel and aircraft; a nd the procedures for safeguarding the vehicle, vessel
and aircraft and its contents.
B. POLICY
It is the policy of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department to tow all vehicles, vessels, and aircraft in accordance
with federal, state, and local laws.
C. TOW REQUESTS
1. When a Department member, during the course of their official d uties, needs to tow a vehicle, vessel, or aircraft,
they may make the request through the SIBPD Communications Unit or they may call the to w company directly.
2. The tow company having a current contract with the SIBPD shall be used.
3. The investigator (sworn or non-sworn member) or other Departmen t member shall remain with the vehicle,
vessel, or aircraft at least u ntil the wrecker arrives.

D. TRAFFIC CRASHES
1. During the investigation of a tra ffic crash owners/operators wh o are present at the scene may be allowed to
choose the tow service, within reason, when a vehicle needs to be towed other than incident to arrest,
evidentiary, or impound.
a. In the event that the owner/ope rator is not present due to bein g transported to a medical facility or has fled
the scene, the investigating memb er shall comply with the provi sions of Article E Tow Slips and Article G
Inventories of this directive.
2. If the vehicle is creating a hazard or is blocking traffic, off icers shall standby for the tow trucks arrival and
provide traffic control to ensure the safety of the motorist as well as other traffic on the roadway.
E. TOW SLIPS
1. The officer/investigator or othe r member of the Department shal l complete form
SIBPD 124-1, Vehicle Storage Receipt (Tow Slip).
2. When completing the tow slip, the following information, at a m inimum, shall be recorded on the tow slip:
a. Date;
b. Time;
c. Make and model;
d. Vehicle identification number (VIN);
e. Reason for removal or tow;
f. Mileage;
g. Location (address) towed from;
h. Towing service name
i. Location the vehicle, vessel or aircraft will be towed to;
j. Placement of and reason for hold,
