PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to establish a code of ethics for all its members. B. SCOPE This code shall be applicable to all members of the Department, including volunteers and contractors. C. POLICY It is the policy of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department to adopt the following code of ethics in order to improve the attitude and practices of its sworn members; minimize injus tice or the perception of injustice; and heighten public confidence in our local government, institutions, positi ons, and people. D. CODE OF ETHICS 1. As a law enforcement office r, my fundamental duty is to ser ve humankind; to safeguard live s and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppres sion or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to r espect the constitutional rights of all people to liberty, equality, and justice. 2. I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn, or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in thought and deed in both my personal and official life, I will be exemplary in obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my department. Whatever I see or hear of a confidential natu re or that is confided to me in my official capacity will be kept confiden tial unless revelation is necessa ry in the performance of my duty. With no compromise for crime and with relentless pro secution of criminals, I will enforce the law courteously and appropriately wit hout fear or favor, malice, or ill will, never employing unnecessary force or violence and never accepting gratuities. 4. I recognize the badge of my office as a symbol of public faith, and I acce pt it as a public trust to be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the police service. I will c onstantly strive to achieve these objectives and ideals, dedicating myself to my chosen profession--law enforcement. E. TRUTHFULNESS 1. Department members are required to speak the truth at all times and under all circumstances, whether under oath or otherwise, except in cases where they are not allowed b y rules and duties to divulge facts within their knowledge, in which case they shall say nothing. 2. Members shall not make or sign a false, improper, or inaccurate statement on any official investigation, report, or record; or attempt to indu ce or cause another to do so. 3. Altering or erasing any entry in any official report, record, o r document after supervisor approval. 4. Falsification of an official report is prohibited. 5.
