A. PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish the guidelines and p rocedures for the deployment and use of ballistic
shields by members of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department.
B. POLICY
The Sunny Isles Beach Police Department has authorized the use of ballistic shields when noncompliant, violent,
combative, and/or armed subjects are involved in situations tha t may lead to potentially violent confrontations, and
when department members believe the use of a ballistic shield i s necessary to address an incident in a tactically
sound manner. The Department realizes special training with thi s equipment is necessary for it to be effective in
these dangerous situations.
No member is authorized to utili ze any ballistic shield other t han those authorized/issued by the department.
C. DEFINITIONS
Ballistic Shield - Protective devices designed to stop or defle ct bullets fired at their carrier. Ballistic shields will
also protect from less serious t hreats such as thrown items, th ough they are typically used in situations where riot
shields would not offer adequate protection.
D. BALLISTIC SHIELDS DEPLOYMENT
The intended use of ballistic shields is to provide cover prote ction for officers involved in situations that may lead
to potentially violent confrontations.

E. EQUIPMENT STORAGE AND ACCESSIBILITY
1. Ballistic shields are available fo r use in the Uniformed Patrol Division and are issued to each shift Sergeant.
2. Ballistic Shields shall be inspected by the assigned officer pr ior to and after all deployments to ensure
operational readiness.
a. Any equipment deemed inoperable shall be removed from use and n otification to the on-duty sergeant shall
be made without unnecessary delay.
F. TRAINING
1. Training members how to use ballistic shields is the responsibi lity of the Training Unit.
a. The material for the course is obtained from the current manufa cturer owner’s manual and/or other ballistic
shield instructor manuals.
