A. PURPOSE
To provide guidelines for those members that investigate allega tions of member misconduct; to provide all members
with information necessary to understand the internal affairs i nvestigative function; to describe the types of
complaints that require an internal affairs investigation
B. POLICY
1. It is the policy of the City of Sunny Isles Beach Police Depart ment to establish authority and responsibility for
conducting internal investigations; to ensure the professional conduct and integrity through fair and impartial
investigations of alleged misc onduct. To ensure the integrity a nd ethical standards of the Department, by
initiating the investigative process in a prompt and thorough m anner, to maintain Dep artment credibility,
confidence, and adherence to policy.
2. Allegations of criminal or work-related misconduct, will not be tolerated; and at the same time, Internal Affairs
(IA) investigations provide a p rocess whereby, Department membe rs unjustly accused can be vindicated.
3. The Internal Affairs investigator shall report directly to the Chief of Police, and shall immediately inform the
Chief of Police of all allegations of misconduct on the part of any member of the Department as soon as it
becomes known to him/her.

4. The Internal Affairs investigat or shall all provide liaison bet ween the Chief’s office, departmental entities, and
other agencies in matters pertaining to internal investigations , as instructed by the Chief.
5. In conducting internal affairs investigations the Police Depart ment shall strive for fairness to both employees
and persons filing complaints, identify necessary changes in De partment policies and procedures, training
needs, and implement those changes approved by the Chief of Pol ice and equitably determine whether the
allegations are valid or invalid , and take appropriate action w here necessary.
C. SCOPE
This policy applies to all employees, volunteers and interns of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department.
D. DEFINITIONS
Internal Affairs Investigation – A formal investigation into an allegation of employee miscon duct that may result
in discipline and/or criminal charges.
E. GENERAL PROCEDURES
1. A complaint, regardless of category, may be lodged with any mem ber of the Department. Complaints shall be
accepted in writing, in person
