A. PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to establish the guidelines for D epartment approved firearms, ammunition, weapons
training, and weapons maintenance for sworn members of the Depa rtment.
B. SCOPE
This policy applies to all sworn members authorized to carry a firearm.

C. POLICY
1. Prior to carrying a firearm or affecting the arrest of another person, Sunny Isles Bea ch Police Department
officers shall complete the Florida Basic Recruit Training Prog ram or its equivalent; review a copy of
Department Policy 119, Response to Resistance; be trained in ag ency policies relating to responses to resistance;
and demonstrate proficiency in the use of each firearm they are authorized to carry.
2. Firearms and ammunition issued by the Department or authorized by the Chief of Police or designee may be
carried and used by officers while on-duty or off-duty. All off icers shall act in good fa ith in the exercise of use
of force and conform to the provisions of Federal, State, and l ocal laws.
D. DEFINITIONS
Authorized Firearm - A firearm/handgun that is regi stered with the Department and complies with Departmental
specifications, and with which the member has received approved training and qualification.

Back-Up Firearms - A handgun carried for on duty back-up use by uniform and pla inclothes officers. On-duty
