PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to identify the authorized less-l ethal weapons available f or use by members of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department and to establish guidelines for the training and main tenance of such weapons. B. SCOPE This policy applies to all Department members authorized to car ry department issued less-lethal weapons. Only those less-lethal weapons specifically listed in this policy ma y be carried by authorized members, while on duty or while acting in a police capacity off duty. C. POLICY 1. The Sunny Isles Beach Police De partment recognizes that non-com pliant, combative, and/or violent subjects cause handling and control problems that require special traini ng and equipment. Thus, it is the policy of the Department to approve the use of certain less-lethal weapons by members of the Department to assist with the de-escalation of these potentially violent confrontations. 2. Prior to being authorized to carry any less-lethal weapon, Sunn y Isles Beach Police Department personnel shall complete the authorized training course for the less-lethal wea pon they desire to carry, review department policy 113 Less-Lethal Weapon and depart ment policy 114 Response to Re sistance and demonstrate proficiency in the use of each less-lethal weapon they are authorized to carry . It is the policy of the Department that authorized less-lethal weapons are used in accordance with this policy, General Order 119 Response to Resistance and all other local, s tate, and federal laws. D. DEFINITIONS Less-Lethal Weapons – Weapons that, when employed, are not likely to cause death o r great bodily harm, but which may have the potential to do so in certain circumstances. ASP Expandable Baton - The expandable baton is to be used for defensive and control purposes only. It is to be used by an officer to defend themselves or other persons when u nder attack and/or to control a person who is combative when the officer is trying to make an arrest. Side-Handle Baton / PR-24 - The side handle baton also known as a PR-24 is an expandable or straight baton used for defensive and control purposes only. It is to be used by an officer to defend themselves or other persons when under attack and/or to control a person who is combative when t he officer is trying to make an arrest.
