PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to define training for newly empl oyed/appointed police officers including guidelines for selection and training of sworn Field Training Officers. B. POLICY It is the policy of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department to assure for a professional standard of recruit training to new officers. This will be accomplished by ensuring the recr uit has met the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission requirements for law enforcement certificat ion and has passed a thorough field training program. DEFINITIONS Field Training Officer (FTO) - An experienced or senior officer who is responsible for the t raining and evaluation of a junior or probationary level member. Field Training Officer Course - A program designed to train newly appointed/employed officer s. Field Training & Evaluation Program - A program provided for newly appointed/employed officers to f acilitate the application of skills and knowledge obtained in the academy /classroom to actual performance in on-the-job situations. Condensed Field Training & Evaluation Program - A training program for newly appointed/employed officers, who have obtained experience as an officer at another agency. Field Training Supervisor (FTS) - The individual who has the direct responsibility of the Fiel d Training & Evaluation Program. Field Training Manual - The manual assigned to each recruit/trainee that contains in formation about the Field Training & Evaluation Program, including checklists, DORs, sche dules, etc. D. SCOPE AND APPLICABILITY This policy applies to all members of the Sunny Isles Beach Pol ice Department. E. REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A FIELD TRAINING OFFICER 1. The minimum qualifications for becoming a sworn Field Training Officer (FTO) are as follows: a. Two years of experience as a full-time, certified police office r; b. Satisfactory completion of the SIBPD probationary police office r program; c. The officer is assigned to, or is willing to be assigned to Uni form Patrol; d. A work history which indicates self-motivation and a minimum r ating of
