A. PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to provide guidelines for all Sun ny Isles Beach Police Department employees who are
sponsored by the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department through a Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Academy or
CJSTC Law Enforcement Officer Proficiency Course.
B. POLICY
It is the policy of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department to provide personnel the training required by the State
of Florida to become certified police officers.
C. DEFINITIONS
Civilian Police Recruit: An employee of SIBPD, who upon authorization to attend police officer certification
training, may be classified as a police recruit. Upon completio n of the training and passing the Florida State Officer
Certification Examination (SOCE), the employee may be promoted to the classification of Police Officer.

Post Academy Recruit: An employee of SIBPD who begins the SIBPD Police Officer Field Training and
Evaluation Program (FTEP) after successfully completing a polic e academy, but prior to taking and/or passing the
SOCE. Previously Certified Officer: An employee who has served as a certified police officer in an other state, or as a
Florida certified officer whose certification has lapsed . A previously certified officer may be hired as a police recrui t
in either civilian police recru it or post academy recruit statu s.
Temporary Employment Authorization (TEA): SIBPD may employ police recruits in the TEA status provided
the requirements of FSS 943.131 and chapter 11B-27.00213, F.A.C ., are met. The recruit may begin the FTEP and
may be authorized to wear a uniform and function as a police of ficer while waiting to attend officer certification
training or pass the SOCE.
D. SCOPE AND APPLICABILITY
This policy applies to all members enrolled in the CJSTC Law En forcement Basic Recruit Training Program or
CJSTC proficiency course, where the City of Sunny Isles Beach i s employing the member while the member is
enrolled in the academy.
E. RESPONSIBILITIES
1. The Training Sergeant or designee shall be the primary SIBPD co ntact for the academy. The Sergeant shall be
responsible for the following:
a. Register the employee in the academy.
b. Maintain contact with academy sta ff to review
