PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for the a dministration and control of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department Ride-Along Program. B. POLICY It is the policy of the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department to offer citizens the opportunity to Ride-Along as observers with members of the Department. The Ride-Along Program policies are ensuring that all civilians participating in the program adhere to the guidelines and criteria established in th is policy. C. SCOPE AND APPLICABILITY This policy applies to all civilians requesting to participate in the Department’s Ride-Along Program. Immediate family members of sworn members are prohibited from riding as an obser ver with their family member but may be assigned to ride with other sworn members. D. REQUIREMENTS 1. Participation: Participation in the Ride-Along Program is limit ed to the following individuals: a. Candidate for employment with the department. b. Board member of any duly recognized home owner’s association wi th the city. TvvÉâÇ àtu|Ä|àç? tÇw exáÑxvàAÊ c. City officials (City Commissioners, City Manager, Deputy City M anager). d. Any individual as approved by the Chief of Police or designee. 2. Background Check: All observers shall be required to submit to a NCIC/FCIC crimin al history and local records check prior to riding as an observer. Any felony record shall disqualify the o bserver. 3. Attire: a. All observers shall dress in appropriate attire. Collared shirt s, jeans or slacks and closed toe shoes are required. b. Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, leggings and other inappropriate c lothing are prohibited. Observers shall not wear anything that may bring discred it to the agency or the law enfo rcement profession. c. Observers shall not dress in a manner that may give the impress ion that they are a law enforcement officer. Permission to ride as an observer shall be withdrawn by a super visor if the observer is dressed inappropriately. 4. Identification Card: a. All observers shall be required to display an identification ca rd on their outer clothing at all times while riding as an observer. This iden tification card shall identify the civilian as an observer. b. Identification cards shall be maintained at the Communications desk. The sworn member assigned to the observer is responsible for signi ng out the card and returning the card to Communications personnel. 5. Observers are limited to a maximum of four (4) hours during any shift, one shift per quarter. Exceptions may be granted by the Chief of Police or designee for reasonable ca use. Examples include, but are not limited to prospective employees, neighborhood association members and stu dent interns. 6. All observers shall be unarmed unless prior written approval is obtained from the Chief of Police or their designee. E. PROCEDURES
