A. PURPOSE
The purpose of this po licy is to establish guidelines and proce dures for the submission of evidence by members of
the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department. The policy aims to ens ure the proper handling, preservation, and
submission of evidence, while maintaining its integrity and adm issibility in a le gal proceeding.
B. SCOPE
This policy applies to all indi viduals and involved in the sub mission of property and evidence,
C. POLICY
1. All property and evidence submitted must meet the legal standar ds of admissibility and relevance in the relevant
jurisdiction. Only property and/or evidence that is directly re lated to the case or matter at hand should be
submitted. All property and/or evidence shall be submitted befo re the officer's tour of duty ends.
2. If a member cannot submit the property/evidence by the end of t heir shift, the following procedures shall be
followed:
a. The member shall notify the on-du ty shift supervisor of the sit uation.
b. The on-duty shift supervisor shall only give approval for the u tilization of an alterna tive storage solution in
the event of a bonafide emergency.

3. It shall be incumbent upon the Property & Evidence custodian to place any recovered property and/or evidence
into agency records within seventy-two (72) hours of receipt.
D. DEFINITIONS
Chain of Custody : the chronological documentation and tracking of the movement, l ocation, and handling of
physical or digital evidence from its initial collection or seiz ure through its storage, analy sis, presentation in court,
and final disposition. It is a crucial process in maintaining t he integrity, reliability, and admissibility of evidence in
legal proceedings.
Evidence : any information, materials, or objects that are presented in a legal or investigative context to support or
refute a claim, establish facts, or provide proof of a particul ar event or circumstance.
Property: refers to items that have been discovered or come into someone’ s possession without any known or
rightful owner. It includes objects that are found in public pl aces, lost items, abandoned belongings, or items left
behind by someone. Found property can range from valuable items like wallets, mobile phones, or jewelry to
everyday objects such as keys, clothing, or bags.
Property for Safekeeping: items or belongings that are entrusted to someone or an organiz ation for secure storage
and protection. It involves the temporary custody and responsib ility for safeguarding the property on behalf of the
owner.
E. PHYSICAL EVIDENCE PROCEDURES
1. All property that is impounded shall have an original Miami-Dad e Police Department property
