Purpose II. Scope I. PURPOSE: This directive states the philosophy and commitment of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office toward establishing and perpetuating close ties with, and responding to, the needs of the community through crime prevention and community-based programs. II. SCOPE: A public commitment of assistance to law enforcement is vital. A mainstay of gathering and retaining this support is employee effort, outreach, and sincerity in promoting community relations and crime prevention programs and functions. The Sheriff's Office is committed to fostering a relationship of mutual trust, cooperation, and respect with its service communities. It does this by informing the public through the media and through the Public Information Officer, of community relations concerns, objectives, and successes. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to informing the community of events involving its administration and operations and, through a constant review and modification of policies and practices, contributes to an improvement of police-community relations. Seminole Neighborhood Policing Division offices are the first level of the Sheriff’s Office having close contact with the community, and Division Captains are empowered to participate in community activities for the benefit of a safer community. All employees are encouraged to become involved in community organizations to better facilitate the flow of information to the agency regarding the needs of the community. If a concern or request for a specific crime prevention program is voiced by the community that cannot be addressed at the employee’s level, employees shall refer these concerns or requests to their supervisors who will subsequently forward them to the Crime Prevention Unit. Community concerns and requests may also be communicated to the Crime Prevention Unit Sergeant during agency-wide Sheriff’s Forums, shift briefings, or during other meetings.
