1033.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance on establishing and maintaining a "Wellness
Period" program for sworn department personnel.

1033.2 POLICY
The Santa Monica Police Department is committed to prioritizing employee wellness to foster
positive work performance and support a healthy quality of life for department members. The
department aims to promote every outcome to make employees healthier. In such spirit,
the Department will provide a designated wellness period to support sworn members in the
development of a proactive wellness strategy.
1033.3 WELLNESS PERIOD
Sworn personnel are entitled to one wellness period of up to 60-minutes during their regularly
scheduled work week. This applies to both employees on the 3-day / 12.5-hour schedule and the
4-day / 10-hour schedule. The wellness period will not exceed 60 minutes. The wellness period
may occur at the start of watch or prior to end of watch. During the wellness period, the employee
is authorized to participate or engage in activities selected from a preapproved list.
1033.4 APPROVED WELLNESS PERIOD ACTIVITIES
Sworn personnel are authorized to perform the following activities during their wellness period:
(a)General workout to include, but not limited to, traditional strength training, functional
strength training, high intensity interval training, elliptical, walking or running on the
treadmill, cross training, indoor cycling, jump roping, boxing, rowing, grappling, and
Pilates
(b)Stretching, mobility, core training, yoga, and/or breathing exercises.
(c)Meditation and mindfulness training
(d)Meeting with the Chaplain, Peer Support Counselor, or Wellness Cadre member
(e)Organized team runs or exercise sessions (consisting of 3 or more employees) within
the City of Santa Monica with approval of employees' lieutenant

DepartmentWellness Period - 21033.5 APPROVED LOCATIONS FOR WELLNESS PERIOD
Generally, sworn personnel are expected to partake of their wellness period within the confines
of the Public Safety Facility (PSF). The authorized areas include:
•POA Gym
•POA Mat room
•Wellness room located on the 1st Floor of the PSF
•Any appropriate location in the PSF that does not interfere with the daily operations
of the facility
•Any team runs or group exercise sessions must be within the boundaries of the City
of Santa Monica and must be approved by the employees' respective lieutenant.
1033.6 EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES
The employee will only participate in one wellness period per work week. The employee may take
the wellness period at either the start of their watch or just prior to end of watch. The employee
must schedule the wellness period no less than a week in advance and must do so with their
immediate supervisor.
If the employee is unable to take all or any portion of their wellness period because of the
necessities attendant to performing required patrol duties, the employee will not be entitled to any
overtime compensation for missed wellness periods or portions thereof.
The employee may not use the allotted time of the wellness period to arrive late to work or leave
work early.
Employees assigned to light duty or modified duty will be allowed to participate in their wellness
period. Employees can only participate in the approved activities that do not compromise the work
restrictions of their modified duty status.
If an employee is injured as a result of the wellness period, they are to follow normal work-related
injury protocol and immediately notify a supervisor.
1033.7 SUPERVISOR'S RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisors should make every attempt to schedule the wellness period at the employee's desired
time. Supervisors must consider the needs of the deployment when scheduling the wellness
periods. Supervisors should monitor to assure each employee is only scheduled for one wellness
period each work week.Supervisors should also assist in making available appropriate locations
for the wellness periods.
Supervisors should review the restrictions of employees assigned modified duty prior to those
employees participating in activities during the wellness period. The purpose being to assure the
activities will not exacerbate the employee's existing work-related injury.
